Madlab, 10th March 2011
This month’s main event was Diana giving us a presentation on her experiences in and tips for gig photography, including some great examples of photos that she’s taken. Useful hints for anyone who’s ever got back from a gig with a memory stick full of blurred pictures of the back of the person stood in front of you’s head!
The Show & Tell theme this month was “Wet”, and you can see some great examples of the varied pictures that were submitted over on the Flickr group. We also discussed themes and topics for the next 3 months’ sessions – announcements on that as soon as we’ve confirmed everything!
Madlab, 10th February 2011
After last month’s talk by Ian from Slaughterhouse Studios, we had a slight change of format this month and had a more open discussion on “photo hacking”, and a few group members brought along examples of equipment (or techniques) that they’ve hacked together. Highlights were Paul’s DIY 3D camera, which gave really impressive results, and Anthony’s flash diffuser made from a cigarette packet.
The discussion turned into an impromptu practical experiment with ‘light painting’, using long exposures and coloured LEDs. For a first attempt, and with no advance preparation, the results were surprisingly good – there’s an example at the bottom of this post and more to see on the Flickr group.
Madlab, 13th January 2011
A great start to the new year, and the newly-energised Undiscovered group. Ian Simpson from Slaughterhouse Studios came along and gave a talk, ostensibly on the theme of “DSLRs for beginners” but actually covering some really useful general tips on equipment, composition and inspiration, as well as technical tips for DSLR users.
Ian was kind enough to stay on the for the show & tell session afterwards, where group members showed off some of their Winter Colours pictures – check out our Flickr group to see what they brought along. Ian gave plenty of practical feedback, including pointing out which ones were good enough to earn money in a stock photo library!
Thanks to Ian for coming along, and we’d love to have him back in the future.
Next session is on Thursday February 10th at 7pm, at Madlab. The theme is “photo hack”, and we’re hoping to have some examples and discussions of how people have hacked together amateur alternatives to expensive studio equipment themselves. The theme of the show & tell is also “photo hack”, so if you’ve ever used a couple of Ikea spotlights to light a subject, or created your own infinity curve, stick your photos onto the group and let us know what the results were like.
Join us for our first session of 2011, the two sessions are:
DSLR for Beginners:
Ian has worked in the industry, in one shape or another, for 21 years. It has taken him around the globe, allowed him to work with some amazing people, become inspired by the little observations in life.
“Working in analogue photography all these years until having my hand forced into digital has made be believe that digital photography has done more good for not so good photographers and nothing at all for very good photographers.”
“Winter Colours” show-&-tell
If you were lucky enough to take advantage of the early Winter weather, bring along some of your favourite snaps and show us your handywork. We’re not looking for technical skill or expensive equipment – just let us see something you’re proud of; you may well be just the inspiration that someone else is looking for!
Welcome to the all-new home for Undiscovered. Don’t worry, the Flickr albums and group still exist to show off our work and to talk all things photography, but we thought we needed more of a “shop front” to show ourselves off and talk about what we do, so here it is.
Here’s the programme for a refreshed Undiscovered in the first quarter of 2011. We’re going to split each session between an activity/demo/talk and then the regular, themed “show-and-tell”. Once we’re up and running again we’ll open up an area of the Flickr discussion group for you to suggest future themes. Also, keep an eye out early in the year for news of a Summer Exhibition!
